What role have monetary prizes played in aeronautical achievement?

This question is at the heart of an aeronautics lesson for 5th through 8th grade science students. Students will have a chance to explore selected high quality web sites to discover how large cash prizes influenced aeronautics. The prizes associated with Lindberg’s flight across the Atlantic and the first human powered flight are featured. Another large cash prize called the X Prize has yet to be won. The conditions for winning the X Prize related to private space travel are listed. Students will also have a chance to design a plane that weighs only 190 pounds including the pilot and can fly at 10 mph.
