Project Completion

Scoring: each glider will receive points in various areas.  The goal is to acquire the most points.

In addition to the size restriction and the list of material requirement, the following point system will be used to determine a winning entry:

 Cost:

         Cost > $50   = 0 points
$50
≥ Cost > $40 = 1 point
$40
≥ Cost > $30 = 2 points
$30
≥ Cost > $20 = 3 points
$20
≥ Cost > $15 = 4 points
$15
≥ Cost > $10 = 5 points
$10
≥ Cost > $5 = 6 points
$5
≥ Cost = 7 points

Glider Flight Distance

Objective:  Student design teams will construct a glider that can glide the longest distance and still remain inbounds.

Þ Course Specs: 50m long x 5m wide

Þ Each team will be given 3 launches

Þ Team member must release glider from designated launch pad

Þ Hand launches only

Þ Glider must stay inside the boundaries for the distance to be valid

Scoring

· Design teams get 3 launches

· Final score is based on flight length measured from the nose of the glider at the point where glider first touches floor

· Judge will mark flight length and measure the distance from the base of the launch point

· Measurement taken in meters and centimeters

· Longest flight that lands inbounds wins competition

· Glider is inbounds only if the nose of the glider does not cross the inbounds line

· Points are granted at 1 point per meter

Glider Time Aloft

Objective:  Student design teams will construct a glider that can stay aloft for the longest

period of time.

Þ Each team will be given 1 launch

Þ Teams must release glider from designated launch pad

Þ Time from the launch to landing is determined when the glider hits the ground.  If the glider strikes the launch pad or other objects, the time will stop when the glider hits the ground

Þ There is no course requirement

Scoring

· Design teams get 1 launch

· Final score is based on total time aloft (rounded to 1 decimal places)

· Longest time aloft wins competition

· One point awarded per second of time aloft

· Time will be rounded to the nearest tenth of a second.  For example if the flight time is 2.54 seconds, 2.5 points will be awarded

Prior to the competition, each individual team will get 15 minutes of practice time for their

gliders.   Teams may forfeit or shorten all or some of their practice time.
